Charles Grant the elder of Carron

Biography

Owner of the Adelphi estate in St Vincent, dying c. 1821, father of Major Charles Grant and George Colquhoun Grant, grandfather of Louisa Ann Grant (each of whom q.v.). Charles Grant of Great Percy Street Rathbone Place had been the recipient of two tranches of Exchequer Loans in 1797 and 1798 totalling £10,000. The enslaved people on the Adelphi estate were registered between 1817 and 1825 in the name of the London merchant D.H. Rucker, probably a creditor.

  1. Will of Charles Grant the elder late of the island of St Vincent but now residing at Havre Kingdom of France proved 23/06/1821. Under the will, he left a moiety (half-share) of his personal and real property to his son Captain Charles Grant of the 8th West India Regiment of Foot, half of the other moiety to his daughter Ann Montgomery Birch wife of Capt. John Birch, and the final quarter to be divided between his daughter Sarah residing with him and his son George Colquhoun Grant lieutenant in HM's 46th Regiment of Foot.

  2. Another son, Edward Effingham Grant, omitted from the will of Charles Grant of Carron, was father of Maria Grant, later Rosetti, portrayed by Daniel Rosenthal c. 1850 as Revolutionary Romania and the subject of Jules Michelet's Madame Rosetti (1851).
