Charles Forbes

???? - 1835

Biography

The Chancery suit of Forbes v Adams heard in 1839 gives background on 'C. Forbes': the link with Charles Forbes is cemented through his ownership of Glasgow estate and the compensation claim for Manchester no. 72 under which the compensation for enslaved people hired on Glasgow was paid into the suit of Forbes v Adams. The account of the case gives Charles Forbes 'formerly of Jamaica but afterwards of Great Stanmore Middlesex', and dying 27/07/1835. Under Charles Forbes and Mary Clutterbuck's marriage settlement, two estates in Jamaica were to be used to raise £18,000 to invest in land in Britain to secure £600 p.a to Mary Forbes nee Clutterbuck after her husband's death. The couple however mortgaged the estates (also for £18,000), and this was held to have invalidated her entitlement under the trust. No will or death record has yet been found for Charles Forbes.
