Biography

William Miller, the 'Attorney-General', a large-scale attorney of estates in Jamaica, most of whose awards were as receiver or executor or in similar capacities, in London in the mid-1830s and apparently dying there c. 1837.

  1. Miller testified in 1836 in London that he had owned 'a few domestics', which appears borne out by his awards. Of modest Scottish origin, his reputed fortune at death appears to have been bult up from management rather than ownership of estates and the enslaved people upon them.

  2. William Miller of 16 Bryanstone Square aged 57 was buried at All Souls Kensal Green 15/03/1837.

  3. The will of William Miller [formerly of Trelawney Jamaica] of 16 Bryanstone Square was proved 01/04/1837. He left his sister Janet McLermont [?] and annuity of £200 p.a.; £100 p.a. to his nephew George Miller son of his late sister Jane formerly Jane Turnbull primarily of Glasgow: George Miller has he sad, been a partner in Cadieu and Miller of Trelawney. He left his plate and china to his niece Christina Oldham (nee Wingate), wife of Joseph Oldham of Dublin, together with enough cash to bring the value of the bequest to £1000. He gave £1000 to another niece Margaret Buchanan, and £2000 to his nephew William McLermont at 30. He left land in Trelwaney to a free woman of colour, Ann Miller, for life with an annuity of £50 currency p.a. His residuary heir was his brother George Miller of 10 Cumberland Street, Portugal Square.
