George Galway Mills

22nd Oct 1765 - 14th Feb 1828

Absentee slave-owner of St Kitts, and MP in Britain.

  1. 'Mills represented the fourth generation of his family settled on St. Kitts, where they intermarried with the leading planter families....He inherited his father’s plantations, but spent much of his life in England.' Mills was a Member of Council, St Kitts in 1800. In Parliament he represented Wallingford from 8 Feb. 1804 - 1806, Mitchell from 1807 - Jan. 1808, and Winchelsea from 1818 - 1820. He was then the registrar of the Supreme Court in New South Wales from Dec. 1823 until his suicide in 1828. He had been imprisoned for debt (amounting to £43,000) in 1806.

The dates listed below have different categories as denoted by the letters in the brackets following each date. Here is a key to explain those letter codes:

  • SD - Association Start Date
  • SY - Association Start Year
  • EA - Earliest Known Association
  • ED - Association End Date
  • EY - Association End Year
  • LA - Latest Known Association
1828 [EA] - 1828 [LA] → Not known

The proprietor of Belmont in St John Capesterre was shown as George G. Mills in the key to the 1828 William McMahon map. The Slave Registers show the estate as in the hands of London bankers throughout.

1792 [SY] - 1828 [EY] → Tenant-for-life

George Galway Mills inherited the real estate and enslaved people on St Kitts of his father Peter Matthew Mills, subject to trusts previously established by his father. It appears likely but not certain that under these trusts he was tenant-for-life, but he was possibly owner-in-fee.
