William Caldwell of Kingston Jamaica

???? - 1819

Biography

Resident slave-owner in Jamaica.

  1. The will of William Caldwell of Kingston Jamaica [made in 1813] proved 13/11/1819 makes no reference to estates owned by him, but deals with his store in Kingston. In the will he provided for his natural children with Priscilla Warden, Sarah Caldwell, Mary Ann Caldwell and another daughter lately born, and a natural son with Betsy Barron of Montego Bay, also named William Caldwell. His residuary legatee was his brother George Caldwell of Jesus College Cambridge (q.v. under Rev. George Caldwell). He asked that Thomas Addison, one of his local executors, take on the management of Cocoa Walk and Kelly's Pen in St Dorothy for the Marquis of Sligo until a fresh power of attorney could be sent out after his death. He instructed that 'all my slaves, viz. Joe, Prudence and her two sons Evans and Peter George and Jenny' be sold.

  2. The inscription recorded at Kingston Parish Church to William Caldwell is confusing: WILLIAM CALDWELL, ESQ., ALDERMAN OF THIS CITY MEM. OF ASSLY FOR ST. DOROTHY. BORN MAY 15, 1771, AT BEVINGTON BUSH, NEAR LIVERPOOL, AND DIED JANY. 29, 1819, IN HIS 45th [sic] YEAR, AFTER A RESIDENCE OF 26 YEARS IN THIS ISLAND.

The dates listed below have different categories as denoted by the letters in the brackets following each date. Here is a key to explain those letter codes:

  • SY - Association Start Year
  • EA - Earliest Known Association
  • ED - Association End Date
  • EY - Association End Year

Although William Caldwell of Kingston's will [proved in 1819] was silent on estate-ownership, his executor was Thomas Addison, who appears in that capacity for this estate, and William Caldwell of Kingston identified the estates of the Marquis of Sligo - who became the owner of this estate - as ones for which a new power of attorney would be required after his death.

1820 [EA] - 1820 [LA] → Previous owner
