Biography

Slave-owner in Westmoreland Jamaica in 1823, implicitly an absentee (the registration was made by an attorney James Grant). Captain James Evans of the Royal Artillery was a contingent beneficiary of the will of his uncle Daniel Carpenter (q.v.) who had been mortgagee-in-possession of Providence Pen in Westmoreland, for whom the attorney was also James Grant.

  1. This was almost certainly the James Evans Captain on the Retired List of the Bengal Artillery now residing at No. 15 Upper Porchester Street Hyde Park, whose will was proved 24/10/1855. He left his property to his sister Harriett, and then to his niece Agnes Hallett. In the will of Daniel Carpenter proved in 1821, he had identified his niece and nephew as Harriett and James Evans, the children of his sister Elizabeth and the Rev. James Evans.
