Lachlan Cuming

???? - 1836

Biography

Lachlan Cuming, owner of Chateau Margo in Demerara and purchaser in 1798 of the Blackhills estate near Elgin in Scotland.

  1. In the summary of the will of Lachlan Cuming made by David Alston, among many specific provisions Cuming made bequests to Jean Anne Brown residing at Elgin (in a codicil redescribed as Anne Brown now in Demerary and in a later codicil back in Elgin), the daughter of Margo Cuming of Demerara [and probably the grand-daughter of Lachlan Cuming]; and he mandated that his 'negro servant Welcome' should be excluded from the Blackhills estate after Cuming's death and his passage to Demerara paid but only if he agreed to leave immediately via Greenock. The 1826 registration, made by Charles Bean, for the Chateau Margo estate, included an enslaved man named Welcome aged 34 'domestic' born in Africa.

  2. Died, on Saturday the 5th inst., at her residence, Rue de la Montagne, Brussels, Margareta Clara, wife of Lachlan Cumming, Esq, of Black Hills, near Elgin, N.B., and of Chateau Margo, in the colony of Demerara, in the 61st year of her age.
