Peter Simond

1692 - 1785

Biography

London merchant and large-scale slave-owner in Grenada, partner with John Hankey (q.v.), whom he adopted.

  1. Death aged 93 of Peter Simond, Esquire, father of the Dowager Lady St John.

  2. Will of Peter Simond Merchant of City of London proved 07/12/1785. He left an annuity of £400 p.a. to his wife Susanna and £6000 for her to pass under her will, £2500 to the younger children of his daughter Susanna Louisa Baroness St John widow and £2500 to the younger children of 'my dear late daughter Lousia Mariana' in such manner and form as 'my dear son-in-law Sir John Trevelyan of Nettlecombe' should determine; the remaining £1000 was for Susanna Simond to bequeath as she saw fit. He left his estates and enslaved people in Grenada to Susanna Louisa St John, Sir John Trevelyan and John Hankey 'my partner (whom with the entire approbation of my said daughter Lady St John and the said Sir John Trevelyan I adopt as a child in consideration of his great fidelity and honourable conduct to me)', as tenants in common. In a codicil he noted the death of his wife and appointed Beeston Long as an additional executor.

  3. Referred to as Simon rather than Simond in a map of Grenada from 1780 but consistently listed in partnership with Hankey so assumed to be Simond.
