Biography

John Harvey of Castle Semple, Renfrewshire, a key figure in the transmission of Grenada slave-property, half-brother of Robert Farquhar, father of Elizabeth Countess of Buchan and of Margaret Harvey (each of whom q.v.).

  1. In 1792 Robert Donald the younger of Medmar and John Rae of Grenada were granted the right to us the name Harvey pursuant to the will of their maternal uncle Robert Harvey of Grenada.

  2. Will of John Harvey of Castle Semple proved 14/02/1821. In the will he rehearsed the terms of an earlier will made in 1812 under English law in Grenada, under which he left his half of three estates Chambord, the Plain and Morne Fendue to Robert Farquhar, subject to annuities to his thee children, Margaret Lee, James Simpson Rae and Elizabeth Rae, and the Upper and Lower Conference estates to his nephews John and Alexander Ross. He left the bulk of his property in Scotland to Margaret Lee, wife of Major James Lee, and altered his original will to leave Upper and Lower Conference to the Lees for life also.
