Second son of John Leith of Leith Hall (1731-1763). Commissioner in bankruptcy [in fact lunacy] of Mrs [in fact Miss] Elizabeth Leith, the heiress to the Tobago property of John Leith (q.v.). In 1816 the General was described as nearest heir to her estate, 'certain plantations on the island of Tobago', when he was in financial difficulty and seeking to settle with his creditors. He is included as 'army officer' in his son Alexander Leith Hay's entry in the ODNB as 'writer on architecture.'
David Hume (ed.) Decisions of the Court of Session 1781-1822 in the form of a Dictionary (Edinburgh, 1839) pp. 194-195; ODNB online G.C. Boase, rev. Kate Bagshawe, 'Hay, Andrew Leith (1785-1862), writer on architecture, also including Alexander Leith Hay, (1758-1838).' The entry says that General Alexander Hay ne Leith succeeded his brother John Leith in 1778. The younger Andrew Leith Hay was MP for Elgin Burghs 1832-1838 and 1841-1847; his uncle Sir James Leith was appointed Governor of Barbados in 1814 and died there in 1816: he also has an entry in the ODNB, H. M. Chichester rev. Roger T. Stearn, 'Leith, Sir James (1763-1816), army officer.'
