13th Aug 1731 - 1775

Biography

John Lyons of Tetworth House Huntingdonshire.

  1. “John Lyons of Antigua and Bath, born 13 Aug. 1731; succeeded to the Lyons estate on the death of his brother Joseph in 1748; Member of Council 1764-1775; died 31 Jan. And bur. 5 Feb. 1775 at Bath, co. Somerset. M.I. in the burial-ground of the Huntingdon Chapel. Will dated 10 Dec. 1763, codicil 13 April 1772; proved 27 March 1775.” Son of Henry Lyons of Antigua and Amy, daughter of Samuel Parry Symes. Married Jane (1733-1792), daughter of Colonel Samuel Harman of Harmans, Antigua, by Dorothy Lloyd.

  2. Will of John Lyons late of the island of Antigua but now of Tetworth House Huntingdonshire proved 15/02/1775. In the will (made in 1760) he left his wife Jane the use of the plantation house in Antigua, and bequeathed to her 'one negro woman Aurilla and her family (that is to say Mora, Flower, Catherine and Guy) and also one mulatta girl called Jenny daughter of Jonnto [?] with the present and future issue and Increase of the female slaves.' He left £2000 each to his son John and his daughters Amy and Dorothy Mary, and to any future children: the real estate went to his son Henry and then in the event Henry died without issue to his son John. In a codicil of 1772 he said his son Henry had died but that he himself had prospered and he therefore left £1000 each to his five [sic] then living children, Amy, Dorothy Mary, Catherine Ann, William and Samuel. There was no mention of his son John (q.v., under John Lyons junior).

Sources

T71/877 Antigua claim no. 266 (Lyons). Compensation for Lyons estate in Antigua was awarded to Norborne Thompson and Henry Shepherd Pearson as trustees under the will of John Lyons deceased. It seems likely that this is John Lyons junior (1760-1816) of Antigua and Saint Austin's, Hampshire, who was the son of John Lyons senior (1731-1775) of Bath and Antigua. Counterclaims were lodged by the three daughters of Rev. Samuel Lyons (1768-1827), 'co-heiresses and residuary legatees of the will of the Rev Honble Samuel Lyons dated January 29th 1827 who was a son and legatee of John Lyons [senior]'.
