Biography

Of Aberdeen, counterclaimant with other family members on the Granton estate in Grenada as mortgagees. The claim was withdrawn and half the compensation was paid to John Brown as executor of John Ross. Named as a residuary legatee in the will of his father John Ross (died 1833).

  1. At Granton Lodge, Cuparstone Road, Old Machar, in the census of 1851 were John Ross senior's wife Helen Ross, age 69, annuitant, born Old Machar and her three daughters Helen Jane Ross, age 39, Margaret U., age 34, Mary Ross, age 29, and two female servants. All three daughters were born in Grenada.

  2. Mary married Captain (later Colonel) Gravenor Kirby of the Bengal Artillery at Pechawar, India, 08/09/1853. A son, Gravenor Ross Kirby, was baptised in Niani Tal, Bengal, in 1858.

  3. Living at 1 Little Ryder Street, St James, Westminster, in the census of 1861, with her husband, sister-in-law and one female servant. At 15 Dee Street, Old Machar, in the census of 1871, age 51, with her husband and three female servants. At the same address in 1881. Died 14/07/1882 aged 63 years.
