Biography

John Hornby of Blackburn, counterclaimed for the enslaved people on the Rabot estate on St Lucia as surviving assignee of bankruptcy of John Tarleton, the surviving partner of Daniel Backhouse. Tarleton and Backhouse of Liverpool were slave-traders.

  1. Of Blackburn and Raikes Hall, head of Hornby and Birley, 'that founded the Brookhouse cottonmills' and son-in-law of Daniel Backhouse.

  2. Death "Same day, [Friday last] in his 78th year, John Hornby Esq., of Blackburn, and of Raikes Hall, Blackpool. He was Deputy-Lieutenant of the county of Lancaster. His loss will be deeply felt by the poor; to whom he was ever a kind and generous benefactor. He was also a liberal benefactor to the various charitable institutions of Blackburn." John Hornby of Blackburn was buried 31/01/1841 in Blackburn age 77.

NB: this was not the same John Hornby (19 August 1810 – 5 December 1892) who was MP for Blackburn 1841-1852.

John Hornby of Blackburn, Lancashire, Esquire.

All my household goods, furniture, wine, books, paintings, carriages, horses, farming stock etc in or about my dwellinghouse at Blackburn and at Raikes Hall to my son Daniel Hornby.

I am a subscriber to the Macclesfield Canal Navigation for 20 shares of £100 each, the residue remaining on account to come out of my personal estate. 10 of these 20 shares to my second son Robert Hornby. Also £15,000 to him, in addition to the freehold estate called Stadpoles in Staining in Hardborne with Newton which I have already conveyed to him, the £3,500 I gave him upon his marriage and the £12,500 which I engaged to pay to him by the deed of settlement upon such marriage.

To my third son William Henry Hornby, £13,500. Also to him the share and interest which I have in the Rotterdam Steam Packets. The said sum of £13,500 is upon condition that he shall execute all such deels as shall be sufficient effectually to release the mansion house in Blackburn where I now reside, and surrounding buildings to the use of my son Daniel. This sum is in addition to the £20,000 I gave him upon his marriage.

To my fourth son John Hornby the remaining 10 of such 20 shares in the Macclesfield Cancal Navigation. Also to him, £32,500.

All my remaining real property to my son Daniel.

All other personal property and debts due to me I bequeath to my sons Daniel, Robert and William Henry upon trust to pay my funeral and testamentary expenses, all debts due by me and the legacies given in my will.

Executors to be my sons Daniel, Robert and William Henry.

Signed 06/07/1831.

Codicil dated 18/06/1836. A further £3000 to my son Robert, £4,500 to my son William Henry and £6,000 to my son John.

Proved at London 01/11/1841 by Daniel Hornby and 17/12/1849 by William Henry Hornby.
