Biography

Owner of Dochfour and Lowlands estates and the enslaved people on them in British Guiana (the compensation for which was paid to George Reed's son John Groscort Reed (q.v.)),and dying in Gloucestershire in 1831.

  1. Will of George Reed of Newent Gloucestershire proved 07/03/1831. In the will, he specifies his 'several estates' in Demerara as Dochfour, Lowlands and two others not yet firmly identified in the compensation records (or in the case of the first, in the Slave Registers), Nabache [possibly Nabaclis, q.v] and Newton Zuyl (more commonly spelt Nooten or Nootens Zuyl (q.v.), in Demerara). He had debts of some £16,000 on the estates, which he ordered to be cleared. He left his wife an annuity of £500; £18,000 to his son John Groscort Reed which he considered he owed John Groscort Reed for managing his plantations; £10,000 to his son Baynes Reed which he considered he owed Baynes Reed for 'his valuable services in attending to the health of the negroes on my several estates'; he left his two daughters, Lucretia Haynes the wife of Edmund Haynes (q.v.) and Elizabeth Reed, £4000 each. He left his estates to John Groscort Reed for life and then to John Groscort Reed's son, also George, 'who is now at school at Mr Tuckers at Charlton Kings near Cheltenham.'
