Herman Hendricks

1787 - 1859

Claimant or beneficiary

Biography

There were apparently two Herman Hendriks or Hendricks in London at this time, and there is confusion possible between them. The Herman Hendriks who appears as a trustee in an award for Black River in St Elizabeth was a merchant of 2 Copthall Chambers. Richard Paterson and William John Richardson, trustees and assignees of Herman Hendricks (implying that he was or had been bankrupt), counterclaimed apparently unsuccessfully on Pan's Lodge and the Derry estate, both in Manchester. Listed in Eli Faber, Jews, slaves and the slave trade (1998) p. 240 as Jewish but not otherwise identified.

  1. Herman Hendriks shown as of Wimpole St and of Island of Jamaica on marriage in 1821 and formerly of Mous [sic, in fact Mons] Jamaica in his death notice aged 72 in 1859.

  2. The Herman Hendriks of Mons is linked by genealogical sites to the Herman Hendriks shown in the 1841 census as a merchant living at Grove Place, Lee Kent aged 50 with Rose (wife?) aged 35, Phillip 18, Rose 17, Herman 16, Frederick 14, Augustus 7, Emily 5, George 4 and Bertha 2, William 10 and Eleanor 9.  Also an Edmund Francis baptised St Pancras 17/10/1832 and Hermonia, baptised St Pancras 06/10/1824. His death certificate shows this Herman Hendriks as aged 71 at death.

  3. Herman Hendriks is shown as himself registering ownership of 88 enslaved people in Manchester 11/09/1817; in 1818 he was (as Herman Hendricks) an owner of 95 enslaved people in St Elizabeth; later Jamaica Almanacs show him as the owner of Mons in Manchester until 1840. Mons was in the hands of Hymen and Judah Cohen as mortgagees-in-possession in the 1830s (Manchester No. 2295)

  4. It is unclear whether the Commission of bankruptcy issued versus a Herman Hendriks of Throgmorton Street Merchant 1826 and certificated (as Hendricks) May 1826 concerns the same man as the above.

  5. The Herman Hendriks late of the Cedars Leytonstone gentleman who died 23/10/1861, whose will was proved by Deborah Hendriks 15/11/1861, effects under £4000, was a different man.
