Biography

Son of Samuel Poole of Wavertree (q.v.).

  1. Samuel Poole, who was born in Liverpool c. 1791, by 1851 was a widower and annuitant aged 60 living in St Augustin parish, Bristol, with five daughters aged 17-29, all born in Jamaica. The daughters were as follows: Esther (1822), Eleanor (1824), Lucy (1830), Rose A. (1832), Anna M. (1834). Also present in the household in 1851 was Anna Chiswell (1831, b. in St George, Somerset) who was the House servant.

  2. Poole was the grandfather of Sir Edward Maunde Thompson (1840-1929), the son of Eliza or Elizabeth Hayhurst Poole (described as a daughter of Samuel Poole, of Ludlow Estate, Clarendon) and Edward Thompson of Clarendon. Sir Edward Maunde Thompson was a major figure in the development of the British Musuem being made Principal Librarian in 1888 (and ‘Director of the Museum’ in 1898), and was a founding fellow of the British Academy, of which he was President 1907-1909.

  3. Poole was also connected Mary Ann Thompson, owner of Dublin Castle and Mount Patience estates in St Mary, Jamaica, who died c. 1833. Thompson's estates were registered to Poole in the almanac of 1840.

  4. The will of Samuel Poole formerly of Cotham Bristol but late of 17 West buildings Worthing was proved 11/12/1869, effects under £4000 by son James Henry Poole merchant of Liverpool and daughter Esther Poole.
