George Gibbs [sic] claimed unsuccessfully as trustee and executor of Elizabeth Alleyn [sic] for the compensation for the enslaved people on Clermont estate in Barbados.
This was Elizabeth Alleyne nee Lane, daughter of John Lane. She had married (as his second wife) William Gibbes Alleyne I in 1776.
Will of Elizabeth Alleyne widow of Odiham Hampshire proved 02/06/1828. She left her nephew William Maynard Payne 30 acres carved out of Black Rock estate and the several named enslaved people as full compensation for his services to her [she revoked this in a codicil after his death]. Under her marriage settlement, she said, she had the power to leave over £3000 secured on Clermont in her will, which she she did, placing the money in trust (among other trustees was George Gibbes the younger City of Bristol merchant) to grandnieces and nephews, the children of her nephews Capt. John Payne and William Maynard Payne.
