Biography

  1. Mary, daughter of John Chippendale and his wife Frances, born 01/05/1816 and baptised 10/05/1816 in St Ann, Jamaica. Her brother John junior (born 1815) was baptised the same day. Her parents had married 06/04/1814 in St Ann. Her godparents were Mrs T. Ashmead (presumably her grandmother, wife of Thomas Ashmeade II) and Mr and Mrs Henry Ashmead (possibly her great-uncle and his wife).

  2. Mary's mother Frances Ashmeade was baptised 28/09/1796 in Jamaica; her parents were Thomas and Ann Ashmeade. Frances had a brother Thomas born 1794 and baptised 1795 in St Ann and a sister Susannah baptised in 1803 in Clarendon. By her first marriage, to John Johnson, Susannah had a daughter Ann Ewbank Johnson (born 12/12/1824 and baptised 26/02/1826 in Jamaica).

  3. Thomas Ashmead claimed unsuccessfully for compensation for the ownership of 10 enslaved people on Chippenham Park as guardian of his children. The compensation was awarded to Mary Chippenham (grand-daughter of Thomas Ashmeade I; she had come of age by the time of the award in 1839) and John Thomas Steer, guardian of Ann Ewbank Johnson (grand-daughter of Thomas Ashmeade I).

  4. Mary Chippindale was a visitor at Northumberland House Private Asylum, Green Lanes, Stoke Newington, in the 1851 census, age 34, annuitant, born West Indies (Charles Carter, q.v. was a patient at the asylum at this date). Not located in 1861. In 1871 she was at 55 Albany Street, Marylebone, age 54, annuitant, born Jamaica, with one female servant. In 1881 she was at 483 Wandsworth Road, Clapham and in 1891 at 109 Malvern Road, Willesden. In 1901 she was at 10 Great Western Road, age 85, with two female servants and a child, Harry A. Bradbury, age 8, who was presumably the son of one of her servants, Mary A. Bradbury, age 50, who was a widow.

  5. Mary Chippindale of 10 Great Western Road, Westbourne Park, Middlesex, spinster, died 07/01/1902. Probate granted to Rev. William Gay clerk and Margaret Hope Steen (wife of Rev. Thomas Hope Steen). Effects £4885 13s 4d.
