In partnership with William Cramsie and John Watt, of Kingston, with whom he was joint owner of enslaved people in Kingston and St George, Jamaica.
In 1835 James McDowell of the house of McDowell Cramsie and Watt was reported to have sent out to Jamaica, on the vessel James Ray, 121 emigrants of the labouring class from the neighbourhood of Ballymoney.
Death "On Thursday, the 26th ult., at the house of Mrs. Jefferson, in this town, aged 53, James M'Dowell, Esq., late of Kingston, Jamaica."
