Claimant or beneficiary

Biography

George Hook Bawn of 9 Newby Place Poplar was awarded the compensation for one enslaved person in Manchester and counterclaimed apparently unsuccessfully as guardian of his eldest daughter for the compensation for an adjacent claim in which the compensation was paid to William Thomas Bawn (q.v.).

  1. George Hook Bawn, reputed son of Mr William Bawn by Elizabeth Hook, a "free quadroon", was born 22/09/1790 and baptised in St Elizabeth 24/07/1791.

  2. In 1841 'Mrs Bawn' aged 40 was living with seven children, including Elizabeth Mary Bawn aged 18 and George Hook Bawn junior aged 8, at Newby Place Poplar. In 1861 Geo. Hook Bawn aged 70 Pensioner Greenewich Mariner born Jamacia and his wife Elizabeth born Poplar were visitors at the house of George Hook Bawn [junior], aged 27 mariner, at 5 Arnold Terrace Bromley-by-Bow.

  3. George Hook Bawn had married Elizabeth Shrimpton at St Dunstan and All Saints Stepney 21/01/1823. Death of George Hook Bawn registered at Greenwich Q4 1861 almost certainly refers to the awardee (i.e. the father not the son born c. 1832).
