Biography

John McKenzie, husband of Margaret Campbell M'Kenzie (née Pendrill) (q.v.), co-heiress of her grandfather William Campbell of New Milns in Hanover, Jamaica and co-awardee with his wife and her three sisters of compensation for the enslaved on the estate.

  1. McKenzie's wife was daughter of John Pendrill of Bath and Margaret Ross Campbell and sister of Elizabeth Fisher, Judith Campbell Longlands and Mary Pendrill (each of whom q.v.). A genealogical source shows him as 'of Malta' on their marriage c. 1828.

  2. In 1861 John Mackenzie, widower aged 65 retired list Civil Service Island of Malta born Perthshire N.B., was a lodger in Holland Terrace Kensington with daughter Margaret Campbell McKenzie aged 35 born Malta and son Rev. Roderick Bain Mackenzie aged 26 also born Malta, and one lady's maid. In 1871 the family was at 4 Clarence Place Portsea, with John aged 75, Margaret C.P. 40, another son also called John aged 46 'landowner' born Malta and two grandchildren.

  3. Will of John Mackenzie late of Villa Gentille Menton France widower gentleman, who died at Milan 3/11/1882 'domiciled in England' was proved by Rev. Roderick Bain McKenzie of Sudbrooke Rectory Lincolnshire 23/02/1883, person estate £1751 9s 4d.

  1. User submitted tree shows Margaret Campbell Pendrill born Bath about 1805 marrying John M'Kenzie of Malta c. 1828 (www.familysearch.org Ancestral File v4.19). John Pendrill had been in Jamaica, appearing as a Lieutenant in the St James Regiment of the militia in 1790.  Will of John Pendrill of Bath proved 26/02/1827, PROB 11/1722.
