Biography

John Strachan, owner of 14 enslaved persons in St Ann, Jamaica. Letters from John Strachan from Thurso, Caithness, Scotland, dated 18/11/1835 and 20/11/1835: ‘I hope there will be no stopage in paying me, I am truly a native of St Ann Jamaica or say a Creole, the above is my property left me by Father and mother.’ Letter dated 24/10/1835: ‘I am no imposter,’ born in 1764 in the Maroon wars, repeated reference to a valuation of £700. No likely match for John Strachan found in the 1841 census.
