Biography

Son of Isaac Baruch or Baruh Lousada (1748-30/05/1831) and Judith D'Aguilar (1747-1821, daughter of Diego Lopes Pereira Baron D'Aguilar), a London West India merchant, partner with Simon Barrow (q.v.) in Barrow and Lousada (q.v., sometimes given as Louzada).

  1. Left £100,000 on his death. Major developer of Sidmouth as a resort. 'West Indies merchant in the City of London and probably a planter in the West Indies.' High Sheriff of Devon 1842-3. "He was apparently the first professing Jew to be made a provincial High Sheriff".

  2. Not to be confused with his paternal uncle Emanuel Baruh Lousada (c. 1744-1832) who also lived in Sidmouth and was a West India merchant. Burke's Landed Gentry states that the uncle Emanuel "Lived in great splendour, on his West India estates": this refers to another uncle, again named Emanuel Baruh Lousada, of Kingston Jamaica (q.v.)

  3. Will of Emanuel Lousada proved 22/01/1855. He left his wife Jane £7000 and an annuity of £1200 p.a.

  4. The will of Isaac Baruh Lousada of London was proved 16/06/1831. In his will, he requested that he be interred in the Portuguese burial ground at Mile End Town. Altogether his legacies exceeded £85,000. He left legacies to a number of Jewish charitable organisations to the Jewish Portuguese synagogues in Kingston, Jamaica and Barbados, and to the poor of the parish of St Botolph, Bishopsgate Street. Also named in his will are his sons David and Emanuel and his deceased sons Jacob and Moses; his brother Emanuel Baruh Lousada of Sidmouth; his unmarried daughters Abigail, Esther and Sarah; his married daughters Rachel (widow of his nephew Daniel Baruh Lousada), Rebecca (widow of Moses Gutteres), Lydia (wife of his nephew Isaac Baruh Lousada, junior) and Bilah Baruh de Symon (wife of his late son Moses); his granddaughter Julie Lousada, daughter of his late son Jacob; Rebecca Aguilar, the wife of his cousin Isaac Aguilar of Devonshire Square; his daughters-in-law Harriet (wife of his son David), Jane (wife of his son Emanuel) and Roberta (widow of his son Jacob). He left legacies to his friend Simon Barrow (q.v.), merchant, a son of his late friend Jacob Barrow of London; to Jacob Mendes de Costa, senior; to Manuel de Castro; and to Samuel Cardozo. He named as his residuary legatees his sons Emanuel and David, whom he also named as his executors along with his brother Emanuel and Simon Barrow.

A biographical dictionary of British wealth-holders Volume Two 1840-1859 (MS) reference 1855/1; nb that 'Isaac Baruch Lousada' is shown as making a claim against which Emanuel Lousada counterclaims as executor of E.B Lousada: there is room for confusion here.
