Biography

Mary Gibbes Allen, identified in the compensation records (possibly erroneously) as the mother of Henry George Acklom Allen, an infant, on whose behalf Rev. Robert Allen claimed interest in a moiety of Mapps estate in Barbados. Deceased by 1835. Her brother the Rev. Richard Smith (q.v.) was awarded the other half of the compensation for Mapps. See separate entries for her children Eliza Susannah, Henrietta Louisa, Mary Elizabeth, Rev. Robert, Henry and Charlotte Allen (all q.v.).

  1. Mary Gibbes Smith was the grand-daughter of Richard Smith of St Mary Islington, whose will was proved 26/10/1776. Under the will, Richard Smith left 'my said negro slave Mary Anne and all her female children' to Mary Gibbes Smith. Mary Gibbes Smith's uncle the Rev. Richard Smith appears to have predeceased his own father (the testator) leaving as part of his estate a mortgage over the estate of Samuel Mapp, which Richard Smith the testator in 1776 described as in his possession.

  2. Richard Smith of St Mary Islington was the father-in-law of Charlotte Smith (nee Turner), who has an entry in the ODNB as a novelist which details her complex financial ties to slavery (which she opposed).

  3. Mary Gibbes Allen is identified as Robert Allen's wife in a dispute with the 3rd Earl of Egremont and the Smith family over property in Barbados in 1803-1807.
