James Neil of Pall Mall

???? - 1878

Claimant or beneficiary

Biography

Of Pall Mall, claiming apparently as creditor on two linked awards in Barbados (on which there appears to have been a settlement of his debt) and one in St Vincent. Given as James Neill in the Parliamentary Papers.

  1. Boyle's 1835 Directory shows James Neil [sic] of 19 Pall Mall, and LBS has inferred him to have been the same man as James Neil, the nephew of Michael and James Cavan (each of whom q.v.). James Neil had been a partner in the Cavan family firm in Barbados. Michael Cavan disinherited him in a codicil of 1832 to his will because of his 'unhandsome' conduct towards James Cavan after Michael Cavan's retirement.

  2. James Neil of 43 Hamilton Terrace, who by the census returns of 1851, 1861 and 1871 had been born in Ireland c. 1794, left £80,000 in 1878. Again, LBS has inferred this to be the same man as James Neil of Pall Mall.
