Notes

Higman noted that the aqueduct at Whitney was impressive. The estate was large and elongated and bounded by Coffee Grove Plantation, Mount Pleasant, Cabbage Hall Plantation, Richmond Park Plantation, Mount Libani Plantation and Polly Pen (1807 boundaries). It was positioned on the western edge of the Mocho Mountain, the estate very nearly enclosed the entire Whitney River (it traveled 3 miles through the estate). The Robertson map of 1804 showed a cattle mill at Whitney. A plan of Whitney dated 1807 by Major John Bonnet Pechon showed a 'gutter' that funneled water from the Whitney river to the estate. Pechon's plan put the number of acres at 3421 with 158 acres of cane land and 2902 acres in woodland and provision grounds. The estate was captured by artist James Hakewill in a private commission for Whitney's owner Lord Viscount Dudley and Ward. Hakewill also depicted a portion of an aqueduct. The estate produced a high ratio of sugar to acres. The produce was transported 15 miles to the wharf at Milk River.
