T71/895: claim from the Earl of Harewood by T. Clarke, his attorney.

This estate was sold in 1970 by Gerald Lascelles, younger brother of the Earl of Harewood.

T71/553 p. 313-21: enslaved persons were registered by Forster Clarke in 1834.

Joseph Sturge and Thomas Harvey, The West Indies in 1837 (London, Hamilton, Adams, & Co., 1838) pp. 142-143: several negroes on one of the Earl of Harewood's estates sent a letter to him complaining of ill-treatment: 'Lord Harewood, desirous no doubt to have the complaint inquired into, and if found true, the abuses rectiifed, sent the lettr to his attorney, who handed it to the manager.' The negroes were summoned before special magistrate Coulthurst and severely punished.
