MSc Law and Finance programme
This innovative, interdisciplinary Masters will equip you with a strong foundation in legal, financial, and economic analysis, and, crucially, the ability to apply that knowledge in context.
The MSc Law and Finance provides a cutting-edge education at the intersection of law, finance, and economics, delivered by the UCL Faculty of Laws, School of Management, and Department of Economics.
Overview
In today’s complex global economy, the expectations placed on legal and finance professionals, especially those in corporate and financial law, have changed dramatically.
Employers are no longer looking for experts who can solely advise on legal issues or financial strategy in isolation. Instead, they increasingly seek individuals who can operate fluently across legal, commercial, and financial domains, understanding the legal, economic, and regulatory drivers behind complex transactions and contributing strategically to high-stakes decision-making.
This MSc prepares you to meet that demand.
You will develop the skills to navigate the interplay between law and finance, learning about financial economics, the operation of markets and institutions, and regulatory frameworks. You will gain the ability to evaluate the financial and regulatory implications of transactions, including corporate financing, mergers and acquisitions, take-private and take-public deals, and corporate reorganisations and restructurings.
A distinctive feature of the course is its emphasis on applied learning. You can choose between two immersive pathways developed in close partnership with leading global firms: deal simulations based on real transactions using market-standard documentation, or placements with international law and finance firms (subject to eligibility, selection, and matching), giving you hands-on experience with live transactions. Both pathways sharpen your legal reasoning, commercial fluency, and practical skills.
At its core, the MSc treats law as a practical tool shaped by and responsive to markets, institutions, and transactions. You will be taught by leading academics and practitioners from the worlds of law, finance, and banking, combining rigorous scholarship with applied experience. By the end of the course, you will have a strong foundation, an appreciation of market drivers, and the professional skills to make an impact in the global legal and financial landscape.

The programme's applied training, through deal simulations and structured placements, bridges academic study with practical experience. Combined with UCL’s global reputation and London’s unparalleled access to financial and legal institutions, this support lays a powerful foundation for a successful and impactful career at the intersection of law and finance. You will gain the ability to analyse market-standard documentation, negotiate deal terms, and assess risk from both legal and financial perspectives. These are skills that are highly sought after by employers worldwide.
A distinctive feature of the MSc is the thoughtful integration of academic study with professional experience. We have developed two immersive training pathways in close collaboration with leading global firms. Both pathways are designed to sharpen legal reasoning and commercial fluency and provide hands-on experience in applying your knowledge to real-world contexts.
These intensive workshops, held over two months at the end of the course, are based on actual market transactions (such as those from the London-based Loan Market Association) in areas like mergers and acquisitions, private equity, complex structured finance, and corporate restructuring.
Developed in collaboration with leading practitioners and academics, these sessions involve analysing market-standard documentation, testing legal arguments, and negotiating deal terms, often held at the offices of participating firms. These simulations allow you to engage with the full lifecycle of model transactions, developing practical skills and strategic insight in a controlled yet realistic environment.
You will produce a short analytical report or reflection as part of this applied component, helping consolidate practical learning with academic evaluation.
This pathway offers placements within leading corporate law firms and financial institutions, where you will gain hands-on experience working alongside practitioners on live transactions. The placement will provide invaluable exposure to the legal, commercial, and regulatory dimensions of transactional work, offering a grounded understanding of how the law operates in practice.
In 2025/26, placement partners included: Clifford Chance; the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development; Interpath Advisory; Norton Rose Fulbright; Sidley Austin; Reed Smith; Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom; and Travers Smith.
Placements are subject to eligibility and availability. A selection and matching process ensures students are aligned with their personal skills and interests, and that they meet the specific needs and expectations of the relevant financial or legal institution, practitioner, or industry expert lead.
We created this MSc to reflect how legal, financial, and regulatory thinking intersect, providing a foundation that is both intellectually rigorous and grounded in real-world practice. Through immersive deal simulations and placements with leading firms, students bridge academic insight with professional demands, gaining the skills to operate fluently across these domains from the outset

Entry requirements
Academic requirements: A high 2:1 (68% or above) across all years of study in an undergraduate degree in law, finance, business, accounting or a related discipline from a UK university, or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard. We may consider applicants who are close to but have not met this threshold if they have extensive practical experience and where spaces on the programme are available.
English language requirements: Level 4
A pre-course in mathematics/accounting basics/quantitative methods will be mandatory for all students who do not have a degree in a quantitative subject, and a pre-course in legal methods will be mandatory for all students who do not have a law degree.
This is a highly competitive programme, with only 45 places being offered this year.
Who should apply?
The programme is open to students with a background in law, finance, economics, or a closely related subject who want to excel in roles in the legal, financial, consulting, and regulatory sectors.
Students can choose to complete the programme in one year of full-time study or over two years of part-time study, making it suitable for both recent graduates and working professionals.
Programme structure
Taught by leading experts in law and finance, the core modules offered on the programme are designed exclusively for students on the MSc in Law and Finance. They blend a thorough overview of financial and regulatory theory with case studies and real-world transactions for students to analyse and discuss in class.
The programme emphasises applying learned theory through practical experience and professional development, enabling students to gain hands-on experience, develop professional skills and build valuable connections. For the required experiential practice component of this programme, students can apply to either:
- Write a report on a work placement with a financial/legal institution (subject to availability); OR
- Write a report on a number of corporate and finance case study deal simulations undertaken with practitioners, industry experts and expert academics; OR
- Write an independent practice project or research essay at the intersection of law and finance supervised by an expert academic.
The work placements and case study deal simulations will involve a selection and matching process to ensure students are not only aligned with their personal skills and interests but also meet the specific needs and expectations of the relevant financial/legal institution or practitioner and industry expert leads.
Compulsory modules:
MSIN0258 - Economic Foundations of Regulation and Government
MSIN0259 – Investments and Asset Management
LAWS0377 – Theory and Practice of the Law of Corporate Finance
Optional modules:
Students will choose optional modules across term 1 and term 2 totaling 45 credits from a list of approved modules from the LLM or MSc Finance programmes.
Compulsory modules:

LAWS0377 – Theory and Practice of the Law of Corporate Finance
Optional modules:
Students will choose optional modules across term 1 and term 2 totalling 45 credits from a list of approved modules from the LLM or MSc Finance programmes.
Compulsory modules:
The remaining 45 compulsory credits are obtained through the completion of a final project, which distinguishes the MSc from interim postgraduate degrees; the aim of this piece of work is to demonstrate the skills students have learned on the programme. Students can choose to either write a report on a work placement with a financial/legal institution (subject to availability); write a report on a number of corporate and finance case study deal simulations undertaken with practitioners, industry experts and expert academics; or write an independent practice project or research essay at the intersection of law and finance supervised by an expert academic.
In part-time study mode, students are expected to take the four compulsory core modules in year one and the optional modules, together with the work placement or dissertation, in year two.
