Modules for LLB Students

Year 1 

During Year 1 of the programme, you will take four compulsory modules totalling 120 credits:

Students enrolled on one of the 'Laws with' language programmes, or the LLB English and German Law programme will also be required to take one of the following non-credit bearing modules:

All Year 1 modules above are considered FHEQ Level 4.

Year 2

During Year 2 of the programme, you will take four compulsory modules totalling 120 credits:

Students enrolled on one of the 'Laws with' language programmes, or the LLB English and German Law programme will also be required to take one of the following modules in place of LAWS0011 Jurisprudence and Legal Theory:

All Year 2 modules above are considered FHEQ Level 6.

Final Year

During Year 3 (Year 4 with a year abroad) of the programme, you will be able to choose optional modules totalling 120 credits. The modules available may include:

Interdepartmental and Intercollegiate students

Please note: Applications can be made throughout the summer and no later than 31 August 2025

Eligibility

Students who have no experience of studying Law at university level are only eligible to apply to LAWS0009 - Law in Action. Any student applying to take this module must be of a good 2:1 standard or, alternatively have secured A*AA at A level, or the equivalent, if the student will be in their first year of study.

Second and Final year Laws modules

Students wishing to study one of the Year 2 or Final Year options in 2025/26 must also have   completed and passed the pre-requisite module (if applicable (see the Module Catalogue for details).

Even if a student fulfils the above criteria, the Undergraduate Programme Director maintains the right to refuse a student a place on a Laws module if the relevant module has reached capacity.

The Undergraduate Team will also review the results of non-Laws students in their prior Laws modules when considering applications (where applicable). Where a student has achieved less than a 2:1 in that module, or less than a 2:1 overall average, the Undergraduate Programme Director may decide to reject the student's request to take another Laws module.

Successful interdepartmental applicants will also be enrolled onto our induction programme (Laws' Connections - LAWS0008) Moodle page and be required to complete the pre-course reading and accompanying multiple choice assessment by mid-October.

UCL BASc Students

All students from the UCL BASc programme who wish to select a Laws module must satisfy the following:

  • BASc students must first study LAWS0009 - Law in Action - before being eligible to study other UCL Laws modules (please note that spaces on the module are limited).
  • BASc students must have achieved a 2:1 performance on the BASc Programme in their first year (60% average and no failures) and at least a mark of 60% in the Law in Action (BASC0057/LAWS0009) module in order to be admitted onto the Foundation modules (LAWS0379/LAWS0380) in their second year of study (below).
  • Second and Final year Laws modules will only be open to BASc students who are entering their final year of study and have studied/passed a Laws module in their second year (or at their overseas host institution). Some modules have prerequisites that must be fulfilled before studying the relevant module.

UCL EISPS Students

Any student from the UCL EISPS programme wishing to select a Laws module must also adhere to the following:

  • EISPS students who have not previously studied a law module can only select LAWS0009 – Law in Action.
  • Second year EISPS students can select Laws Foundation modules (LAWS0379/LAWS0380).
  • Final year modules can only be selected by those entering their final year of study,  if they have previously studied and passed two Laws coded modules (Year 1 or Year 2 modules taught by the Faculty of Law).
  • EISPS students can take ELS II modules in their second year, but they must previously have studied the relevant ELS I module. In order to be accepted onto ELS I students must email the UG Team to arrange an interview with the ELS tutor.
  • Some modules have prerequisites (see the Module Catalogue). 

 

Pathway to Final Year Laws modules

The introduction of two new foundation modules, along with the existing Law in Action module, creates a pathway for non-Laws students to take most final year Laws modules in their final year.

Students will take LAWS0009 – Law in Action in their first year and both foundation modules (LAWS0379 – Foundations in Private Law & LAWS0380 – Foundations in Public Law) in their second year. This will qualify non-Laws’ students to take most final year Laws modules.

As the new pathway is in the transition phase, non-Laws students entering their second or final year will be assessed based on the existing restrictions as outlined above.    

How to apply for a place on a Laws module

In addition to the module information links above, interdepartmental and intercollegiate students should email the UG office at ug-law@ucl.ac.uk

UCL Interdepartmental Students (excluding EISPS - see next drop down for details)

Students from other departments at UCL wishing to take a module in Laws should email the Undergraduate Office (ug-law@ucl.ac.uk) in the first instance. This email should include your details (name, year of study and programme of study), the module you wish to apply for and a short statement outlining your interest and motivation to study the module. We will be able to download your results to date from Portico; if you are enrolling on to your first year of your degree programme in September please forward the details of your most recent school qualifications/grades. 

If you are an Affiliate student at UCL, please note that most assessments for Laws modules take place in Term 3, and students are required to be available to sit assessments during this period. Assessment schedules are published during the course of Term 2.

Applications can be made over the course of the summer. The deadline for all applications is 31 August 2025. Please note that spaces are in high demand and modules are likely to close well before the deadline.

Applications will be referred to the Undergraduate Programme Director for consideration and the Undergraduate Office will notify candidates of the final decision over the course of summer. If your application is approved we will instruct you to enter the module via Portico.

Please note that when timetabling the undergraduate teaching we are unable to take into account the timetables of other UCL departments. If there is a timetabling clash, it is your responsibility to resolve this.

UCL European and International Social and Political Studies BA Applicants

This section contains information for students enrolled on the European & International Social & Political Studies BA at UCL. Students enrolled on other degree programmes at UCL should read the guidance in the section above for UCL Interdepartmental Applicants.

Students on this degree programme are able to select the Laws modules they wish to complete via Portico Module Registration and your choices will be approved/rejected accordingly.

Those who have not studied any Laws coded modules before are required to take LAWS0009 – Law in Action.  Year 2 EISPS students can select the foundation modules, LAWS0379 – Foundations of Private Law and/or LAWS0380 – Foundations of Public Law.  Final year Laws modules are only open to those who are entering the final year of their degree programme and if they have previously studied and passed two Laws coded modules from the Year 1 or Year 2 options.

The Laws Undergraduate Office will also review the results of EISPS students in their prior Laws modules when considering applications, with an expectation of marks at 60% or above.

It is unlikely that those who are not entering their Final Year will be accepted on our Final Year modules. However, if you are interested in taking these modules in Year 2 then contact the Undergraduate Office (ug-law@ucl.ac.uk) who will review applications on a case-by-case basis.

New pathway

If you are interested in taking the Year 1 European Legal Systems I (French/German/Spanish) module then you will need to meet with the Module Convenor to test your language ability before you can be accepted onto the module. These modules are a pre-requisite for the Year 2 European Legal Studies II (French/German/Spanish) module. Please select the relevant module code (listed below) in your Portico Module Registrations and then email the Undergraduate Office (ug-law@ucl.ac.uk) to arrange an interview with the Module Convenor.

European Legal Studies I (French) – LAWS0003 European Legal Studies I (German) – LAWS0004 European Legal Studies I (Spanish) – LAWS0005

Non-UCL Intercollegiate Applicants

Final year Laws modules are open to inter-collegiate students entering their final year of study. Some modules have prerequisites that must be fulfilled before studying the relevant module. Students from the other University of London institutions wishing to apply to take a UCL Laws module should email the Undergraduate Office (ug-law@ucl.ac.uk) in the first instance. This email should include your details, the module you wish to apply for, a copy of your transcript/grades achieved to date and a statement outlining your interest and motivation to study the module.

Applications can be made over the course of the summer. The deadline for all applications is 31 August 2025. Please note that spaces are in high demand and modules are likely to close before the deadline, therefore all requests are subject to availability.

Applications will be referred to the Undergraduate Programme Director for consideration and the Undergraduate Office will notify candidates of the final decision over the course of summer.

2025-26 Laws Affiliates

Affiliate students joining the Faculty for a Study Abroad year are required to select their top 6 module preferences ahead of their arrival at UCL Laws. Some modules have prerequisites. Affiliate students will then be allocated to modules to the value of 120 credits and will be notified of their module allocations in the summer prior to the start of their study abroad year.

Prior to submitting your module choices, please discuss and gain approval from your home institution for your chosen modules and ensure that you meet any special requirements. Upon submission of your module preferences, you must confirm that you meet all requirements and have approval from your home institution to enrol on all of the modules that you have selected.
