Professor Sir Jonathan Montgomery was knighted in the Queen’s New Years Honours 2019 for services to bioethics and healthcare law.

He has pioneered the academic study of healthcare law, outlined an agenda for studying the governance of bioethics, and lent his expertise to a range of institutions. He is co-chair for the Moral and Ethical Advisory Group within the Department of Health and Social Care. His work during the Covid 19 pandemic included chairing the NHSX ethics advisory board for development of the COVID-19 contact tracing app and leading an expert deliberation for the Ada Lovelace Institute on ‘vaccine passports’.

He served as Chair of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics from 2012-17, giving evidence to Parliamentary Select Committees on various issues including the regulation of mitochondrial replacement therapies. His George Griffin lecture in 2017 explained his work as Chair of the Health Research Authority (2012–19) on making the UK a great place to do health research. Since March 2019 he has been Chair the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
