Working Families

Breadcrumb trail

About the project

Working Families is the UK’s national charity for working parents and carers. Their mission is to remove the barriers that people with caring responsibilities face in the workplace.

They provide free legal advice to parents and carers on their rights at work. They give employers the tools they need to support their employees while creating a flexible, high-performing workforce. And they advocate on behalf of the UK’s 13 million working parents, influencing policy through campaigns informed by ground-breaking research.

The Legal Advice Service gives free advice on employment rights and in-work welfare benefits to working parents and carers. Last year, we advised over 3,000 parents and carers on their rights at work and over 1.6 million via our advice website pages.

They advise on all aspects of employment law (specialising in parental rights and discrimination) as well as welfare benefits (statutory family pay, Universal Credit, childcare support, etc).

Student role

Working Families’ award-winning Legal Advice Service is looking for an Advice Volunteer to help keep our telephone and email helplines running smoothly.

In return for volunteering with us, you will have the chance to work in our team of qualified solicitors and legal rights advisers to deepen your skills and knowledge in employment law and in-work welfare benefits.

This opportunity is ideal for aspiring barristers, solicitors or those looking for a career in advice work. Our past volunteers have gone on to secure pupillages, training contracts, and paralegal roles.

As an Advice Volunteer, you will have the opportunity to:

•    Triage emails and calls on our advice line
•    Interview and take details of those seeking our advice
•    Support helpline admin processes, such as monitoring emails and filling out work records
•    Research the law
•    Draft preliminary advice to clients
•    Review and edit advice pages
•    Keep up to date with news relevant to our work

You will have the opportunity to be a full member of our team, attending regular, virtual team meetings and participating in discussions.

This opportunity will be remote.
