About the project
IntoUniversity recognises that ‘young people from the UK’s poorest backgrounds face a considerable educational disadvantage.’ This decreases the likelihood that they will go to university and enter certain professions. IntoUniversity provides an innovative support programme for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to help overcome the obstacles they face in getting into and going to university.
This can have a significant impact on its students. For example, research conducted by IntoUniversity shows that in 2015 80% of IntoUniversity students progressed to university compared with the national average of 34% for maintained (state) schools in 2014.
Student roles
UCL students can support the work of IntoUniversity by participating in Buddy Days, where they will be allocated to a group of school students for the day and conduct tours on campus, give presentations and run workshops. On these days, UCL students will act as mentors for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds that are interested in going to university and studying law. This both inspires and encourages them to think about their futures.
The next Buddy Day is taking place on Wednesday 29th June 2022 at Bentham House.
