UCL iLAC Public Legal Education Project

Recruitment for the UCL iLAC PLE Project is now open

Breadcrumb trail

About the project:

The UCL Integrated Legal Advice Clinic (iLAC), based in central Stratford, offers local residents free face to face general legal advice on all aspects of social welfare law including welfare benefits and housing.

As the impact of COVID-19 continues to be felt by everyone in society, particularly the most vulnerable, the need for social welfare advice has increased significantly. However, many already over-stretched advice agencies are struggling to cope with the growing demand.

One way to address some of this demand is through Public Legal Education (PLE) programmes which help members of the public understand their legal problems. It is not about providing legal advice but helps individuals understand their legal rights, how legal processes work, and develop their knowledge and confidence to deal with legal issues.

To meet the growing need, the UCL Integrated Legal Advice Clinic is looking to develop our own PLE materials to provide legal information to those who would not otherwise be able to access it.  These materials will take the form of a series of short videos across a range of legal issues and topics, such as welfare benefits, housing, and employment and will be aimed at guiding individuals through their legal problems.

The Role:

We are looking for students who, working in small groups, will research relevant areas of law and review existing PLE materials to draft scripts and storyboards for videos. Students with design, video editing, or other creative skills can also contribute to producing the videos themselves.

These videos will be made available on YouTube and shared with existing clients and with the Community more broadly.

Students on this project will develop their attention to detail, research, team working, and drafting skills while also developing substantive knowledge about new areas of law.

Time commitment and schedule:

This role is flexible and requires students to work in small groups to undertake the research and writing. Students are expected to liaise with eachother and their supervisors to arrange mutually convenient times to discuss.

This opportunity is open to all LLB and LLM students.
