Faculty Office Annual Rule of Law Lecture 2025

On 10 July 2025, Professor Stephen Mayson delivered the Faculty Office Annual Rule of Law Lecture 2025 entitled: “I will Act Uprightly and Justly”: Notaries Public, the Rule of law and Ethical Integrity

In his lecture, Professor Mayson discusses the rule of law and ethical integrity obligations of notaries public in the context of their specific regulatory responsibilities. In doing so, Professor Mayson highlighted the ‘principally public nature’ of the role of notaries, with their role in relation to the public interest being ‘clear and fundamental.’ This inherently public conception aligns with Professor Mayson’s discussion of the meaning of ‘public interest’ set out in his second supplementary report of the Independent Review of Legal Services Regulation.
