Oliver H
  • MA International Relations (London)
  • LLM International Economic Law (Edinburgh)

Oliver joined UCL as a PhD student in 2023. His research focuses on the institutional diversity of the global trade regime and how legal instruments can moderate tensions between different market forms. He aims to understand the extent to which current regulations can create a legal level playing field for fair and open competition amidst regulatory divergence. Oliver examines the interface problem between distinct domestic legal regimes and global trade rules. He is particularly interested in industrial policy practices and how WTO and EU law can limit spillover effects, such as through trade defense measures.

Oliver has gained experience in various international institutions, including the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), and the Permanent Mission of Malta to the United Nations in New York City. He also has experience in commercial litigation at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. Additionally, Oliver specialized in trade law while working at the European Parliament's Committee on International Trade (INTA), and he conducted research on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) during his research stay at the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in South Africa. He currently holds a position at the UK Department for Business and Trade.
