GCDC PhD student member Edward Pérez recently participated in a podcast (in Spanish) on the constitutional implications of Venezuelan amnesty laws after the US intervention in January 2026. He discussed circumstances in Venezuela before and after the intervention. Pérez contended that the before was characterised by lack of independence of the judiciary and criminalisation of dissidence. Meanwhile, the after was marked by an apparent ‘protection’ of the US over Venezuela that led to the release of political prisoners, yet without any clarity of the potential for democratic recovery or a transition to democracy that may arise from these exceptional circumstances.
