GCDC member Professor Ronan McCrea has recently published an audio version of his new book, The End of the Gay Rights Revolution: How Hubris and Overreach Threaten Gay Freedom (Polity, 2025). In this timely work, Professor McCrea addresses the challenges faced by the gay rights movement today. He argues that for the movement to endure, a fundamental reconsideration of its goals, its history, and its limits is needed.
The print version of the book was published in 2025 and launched with events at London and Dublin. The book has been described as a ‘thoughtful and timely reckoning with the triumphs and vulnerabilities of the gay rights revolution’ (Yascha Mounk). Professor Barry Schwartz adds, Professor McCrea’s ‘focus is on gay rights, but the lessons he offers apply across many areas of our collective social, cultural and political lives’.
The audio version of the book can be accessed on Audible.
Professor McCrea will be interviewed by Professor Philippe Sands about the book at the Hay Festival on 23 May 2026. Tickets can be booked on the Hay Festival website.
