On Thursday, 7 May 2026, Dr Mara Malagodi (Warwick Law School) delivered a Sidney Seminar at the GCDC, entitled ‘“Gen Z” Protests and Constitutional Instability in Post-Conflict Nepal’.
In the seminar, Dr Malagodi examined the ‘Gen Z’ protests that took place in Nepal in September 2025, situating them within the broader context of Nepal’s constitutional history. While the immediate trigger for the protests was a social media ban, she argued that there were deeper causes rooted in the failure to meet the widespread expectations of a ‘new Nepal’ promised in the 2015 post-conflict constitutional settlement. Dr Malagodi highlighted some shortcomings of the 2015 Constitution and emphasised the need for both key constitutional amendments (particularly with regard to discriminatory citizenship provisions) and more effective implementation.
The presentation was followed by comments and questions from participants at the seminar. Dr Natalia Morales-Cerda (UCL Laws) chaired the event.
