Philippe Sands KC, Professor of the Public Understanding of Law at UCL Laws, has been awarded the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade – one of Europe’s most prestigious cultural honours – for his acclaimed writing on peace, justice and international law. The jury particularly commended Professor Sands’ advocacy for human rights.
The Prize, awarded annually since 1950, recognises individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to humanity and understanding through literature, science or the arts. Announcing the award in Frankfurt, the German Publishers and Booksellers Association described Professor Sands as a “committed author and humanist who, despite growing resistance, tirelessly advocates for human rights and strives for justice and understanding”.
Professor Sands is the author of works including East West Street (2016) and The Ratline (2020). His most recent book, 38 Londres Street (2025), blends personal memoir, historical investigation and gripping courtroom drama to document legal efforts to bring war criminals to account.
In addition to his work at UCL Laws, Philippe Sands is a Visiting Professor at Harvard Law School, a practising barrister at the International Court of Justice and other international courts and tribunals, and an international arbitrator. He frequently advises governments, international organisations, NGOs and the private sector on international law. Among other initiatives, Professor Sands has played a leading role in efforts to establish ‘ecocide’ – the destruction of ecosystems – as an international crime.

Professor Sands has received many awards for contributions to international law, freedom and justice, including the Erich Maria Remarque Peace Prize, the Law and Society Award, and the Henri Rolin Medal. He is an Honorary Fellow of the British Academy and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
The award ceremony will take place on 11 October in Frankfurt, where Professor Sands will deliver a lecture broadcast live on national television in Germany.
