Lyonnais Appears Before the Supreme Court of Canada

In March 2026, GCDC PhD student member Marie-Hélène Lyonnais appeared alongside her colleagues before the Supreme Court of Canada, representing the appellants in a constitutional challenge to the Act Respecting the Laicity of the State.

The case, heard by the Supreme Court over four days, raises critical questions pertaining to Canadian federalism, constitutional architecture and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms’ notwithstanding clause.
