GCDC member Verónica García de Cortázar has recently published an article in Feminist Legal Studies. The article, entitled ‘The Structural Oppression of Women in the Context of Childbirth’, argues that current legal responses fail to adequately address obstetric violence because they do not recognise its structural dimension, which is rooted in the broader oppression women experience in the context of childbirth.
It identifies three main forms through which this oppression shapes women’s experiences: masculine domination, professional domination, and structural violence. The article concludes that structural oppression must be addressed, as it is unjust and violates women’s rights.
