Professor George Letsas has delivered a keynote address at the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU). The address, given on 18 September, was on the topic of ‘Proportionality in Human Rights as an Ethical Principle’ and moderated by Thomas von Danwitz, Vice-President of the CJEU, and Damjan Kukovec, Judge at the General Court of the European Union.
The event brought together colleagues and members of the Court, including the President of the Court, Koen Lenaerts, for a rich exchange of ideas. Professor Letsas discussed the methodology employed by various human rights courts in adjudicating human rights, with a particular focus on proportionality. This sparked a lively discussion on the role and place of this principle in human rights adjudication, as well as on the ethos and telos of the judiciary within a modern setting of separation of powers.
The role of the CJEU is to ensure EU law is interpreted and applied the same in every EU country, and to ensure countries and EU institutions abide by EU law.
