UCL Laws awarded Silver in Green Impact Awards for fourth consecutive year

We are delighted to share that UCL Laws has been awarded the Silver award in the Green Impact scheme for the fourth consecutive year, as part of the UCL Sustainability Awards Ceremony held on Wednesday, 9 July.

This achievement highlights the dedication of our Green Laws team, staff and students in embedding sustainable practices across the Faculty.

Part of UCL’s wider sustainability strategy, the Green Impact scheme challenges teams across the university to take practical actions each year to make our workplaces and community more sustainable. At UCL Laws, this work is led by Jenny Slavin (Faculty Lead Green Champion) and Hannah Willcocks (Green Champion).

Green highlights from this year

Laws 28 Days of Sustainability

One of the key initiatives was the Laws 28 Days of Sustainability, which ran alongside UCL’s university-wide challenge. Some of the 28 daily challenges included:

• Meat-free Mondays
• 4-minute showers to save water and energy
• Using reusable water bottles and cups
• Cycling instead of driving
• Turning off standby mode on devices

These small changes supported our planet, our wellbeing and even helped save money! 

Congratulations to our prize draw winners, academic and teaching staff Dr Mark Dsouza and Levin Guever, who each received an eco-voucher (to spend on sustainable products) and chocolates.

Christmas Switch Off

The Faculty also participated in UCL’s Christmas Switch Off competition, which aimed to save energy over the winter break. UCL Laws won the challenge across the whole institution, contributing to an overall energy savings of more than 1.1 million kilowatt-hours.

This is equivalent to reducing 225 tonnes of carbon emissions (the same as planting around 3,700 trees) and saving UCL over £184,000.

Easter Switch Off

At Easter, our team received an honourable mention for the UCL-wide Easter Switch Off, which helped save 264,000 kilowatt-hours of energy, reduced carbon emissions by 52 tonnes, and saved around £46,000.

We were especially pleased that our very own LLB student, Trevor Wan, was the individual prize draw winner.
