Vinson & Cissy Chu Charitable Foundation boosts support for UCL200 scholarship
7 January 2025
The Vinson & Cissy Chu Charitable Foundation has generously increased its support for the UCL200 Laws Vinson Chu PKU/UCL Scholarship, providing an exceptional opportunity for Chinese law graduates from Peking University to pursue an LLM at UCL Laws.

The scholarship, first established in 2016, will now offer £60,000 for one academic year, covering full overseas tuition fees for the LLM programme as well as living expenses. The award is open to outstanding candidates from Peking University who demonstrate both academic excellence and financial need, furthering UCL Laws' mission to attract the best legal scholars from around the world.
The scholarship is one of several scholarships launched by UCL Laws to mark the 200th anniversary celebrations of UCL, announced earlier this term. With the additional funding, UCL Laws will welcome scholars commencing their studies in the lead up and during the UCL200 celebrations.
Interested applicants are advised to email studentmobility@law.pku.edu.cn for further information. Please note that this scholarship is only open to PKU students and recent PKU graduates.
Professor Scotford, Dean of UCL Laws, commented:
“On behalf of UCL Laws, we are incredibly grateful for the generosity of the Vinson & Cissy Chu Charitable Foundation. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Winston Chu, one of our esteemed UCL Laws alumni and trustee of the Foundation, for his enduring commitment to supporting the Faculty and its students throughout the years.”
The Foundation has maintained a longstanding relationship with UCL, contributing to numerous scholarships and events. In 2010, Winston Chu generously supported the creation of the original Cissy Chu Common Room in Bentham House, established and named in his mother’s honour. Building on this legacy, Winston made a significant donation in 2017 for the relocation of the room as part of the Bentham House redevelopment.
Angharad Milenkovic, UCL Vice-President (Advancement), added:
“We wholeheartedly believe that who you are and where you are from should not be an obstacle to study at UCL. By working with donors like the Vinson & Cissy Chu Charitable Foundation we can turn this shared principle into reality and unleash the power of scholarships to transform the lives of those who possess remarkable talent but face barriers to fulfilling their potential.”
Winston commented:
“I am delighted to extend the Foundation’s support for this prestigious scholarship, which reflects our commitment to fostering academic excellence and global collaboration. By enabling a deserving Peking University graduate to pursue their studies at UCL Laws, we hope to empower future leaders in the legal profession while further strengthening the Faculty’s ties with scholars and institutions around the world.”
