GCDC member Dr Ewan Smith has, together with Samuli Seppänen at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, published an article titled ‘The New Chinese Doctrine of Non-Intervention’. The paper, which appears in the journal International and Comparative Law Quarterly, critiques a new doctrine of non-intervention in international law. The Chinese government sometimes accuses other states of ‘interfering in its domestic affairs’. It claims this is a violation of international law. The same approach might be appealing to governments who wish to challenge foreign interference in liberal democratic processes. The article argues that this is the wrong approach.
