12 September 2024
Leon has been awarded a grant by NUS, which will support his doctoral research on the division of matrimonial assets based on the best interests of the child.
UCL Laws PhD candidate Leon Vincent Chan has been awarded a National University of Singapore Development Grant along with the title of ‘Young NUS Fellow’ for academic year 2024-25.
Leon has been pursuing his PhD since 2022, under the supervision of Professor Alison Diduck (principal supervisor) and Professor Rob George (subsidiary supervisor). His thesis considers how moral parental obligation can justify situating the child's best interests in financial provision by parents, and in turn, providing the child with a share from the division of matrimonial assets. Leon is also the recipient of UCL Laws’ own Joseph Hume PhD Scholarship for academic year 2024-25.
The National University of Singapore Development Grant is awarded based on the recommendation of the NUS Faculty of Law to individuals with an outstanding academic and/or international research track record.

“I am grateful to have been awarded the NUS Development Grant. This grant provides additional resources and opportunities to support young academics, like myself, in our research. I cannot wait to further my research in family law, and look forward to collaborating with the brilliant scholars back home.”
