Professor Philippe Sands KC honoured with De Sanctis Award for Human Rights

The prize is awarded by the De Sanctis Foundation, and honours outstanding individuals who have fought for human rights.

Professor Philippe Sands KC, Professor of the Public Understanding of Law at UCL Laws, has been awarded the De Sanctis Award for Human Rights.

The ceremony took place at the Court of Cassation in Rome on Monday 28 October. This year’s recipients included Sister Simona Biondin, Alessandra Kustermann, and in memory of Mariagrazia Cutuli, alongside Professor Sands. During the event, Professor Sands delivered a keynote lecture titled “Crimes Against Humanity and Genocide: Then, Now, Here, There.”

Established in 2022, the De Sanctis Human Rights Award honours those who have committed their professional careers to upholding and defending human rights. This accolade recognises outstanding individuals who have left a profound impact through advocacy for justice and the defence of equality, freedom and dignity for all.
