The visit began with a discussion on a draft article by Professor Myriam Hunter-Henin (Professor of Comparative Law and Law & Religion at UCL Laws). The article explored the interaction between private international law reasoning and human rights inspired by the European Court of Human Rights case of Verein KlimaSeniorinnen Schweiz and Others v. Switzerland (application no. 53600/20).
Professor Spielmann was then welcomed over lunch by Professor Erin Delaney (Leverhulme Professor of Comparative Constitutional Law at UCL Laws) and Council members of UCL’s Global Centre for Democratic Constitutionalism. Their discussions centred on the role of international courts in supporting democracy.
In the afternoon, Professor Spielmann took part in a Comparative Human Rights class for LLM students led by Professor Hunter-Henin and convened by Dr Berihun Gebeye (Lecturer in Law at UCL Laws). The class offered students a unique opportunity to learn from a leading figure in human rights and international law.
The visit was met with great enthusiasm by colleagues and students alike, who appreciated the opportunity to interact with Professor Spielmann and hear his insights and expertise.
Professor Spielmann joined UCL Laws as Honorary Professor in 2013, and was formerly President of the European Court of Human Rights. In October this year, he was appointed as Advocate General to Court of Justice of the European Union.
