On 15 July, UCL staff and students were celebrated for the fantastic equality, diversity and inclusion related efforts across the university at the annual UCL Inclusion Awards.

Winners from across the UCL community were announced in six award categories. Ram Sabaratnam, who was Projects Coordinator at the UCL Centre for Access to Justice, won the Sir Stephen Wall award for Inspiring Role Model. The award is open to staff and students, and recognises someone who has engaged with members of our community, and spoken openly about their personal experiences in a visible forum that encourages and champions diversity and inclusion.

The award is a true testament to the difference Ram has made to students in supporting them with their pro bono activities and helping to develop their passion and skills in delivering access to justice. Ram has been an inspiring role model for the Centre’s team of volunteers during his time here. He has been incredibly open both with colleagues and students about his experiences, encouraging other students to feel comfortable opening up themselves. He is often able to tease out the issues which can impact students and prevent them from reaching their full potential both within extracurricular and academic activities, and provides the additional support they need whether it be careers advice, academic support, or even just a friendly ear. While Ram has since left the Centre to train as a solicitor, he will continue to serve as a mentor for students wishing to enter the legal profession.

Shiva Riahi, Deputy Director (Projects) at the UCL Centre for Access to Justice, said:

"Ram has had a transformational impact on the student community at UCL Laws and during his time as Projects Coordinator, we've seen a significant increase in engagement with CAJ and pro bono work. He always goes above and beyond for our students and in being always open and authentically himself, he encourages everyone around him to do the same.”
