UCL Laws LLB student Charmaine Chang awarded Laidlaw Scholarship

1 April 2022

The Laidlaw Scholars Leadership and Research Programme sponsors scholars in 13 leading universities, and aims to encourage and develop future leaders in any field of activity.

Charmaine Chang

Charmaine Chang, a first-year UCL Laws student studying the Bachelor of Law (UCL) and Bachelor of Law (HKU) LLB, has been awarded the Laidlaw Scholarship.

The Laidlaw Research and Leadership Programme runs at a number of leading UK Russell Group universities and internationally, involving two six-week summer projects and several weekends of leadership training. Gaining a place on the Laidlaw Programme is widely regarded as an indicator of exceptional academic and leadership promise.

Over the summer, Charmaine will be working with Dr Niamh Connolly (Lecturer at UCL Laws) and her team on a project on the law governing restitution when people have performed invalid contracts.

Charmaine will be comparing duress in contract and unjust enrichment law, as well as examining secondary literature and case law to differentiate duress in contract and cases of invalid contracts. Charmaine will also be assisting by working on the creation of a database of the case law, as well as producing a short online report.

As part of the Programme, scholars are required to take part in a Leadership in Action Project. Next summer, Charmaine aims to conduct a self-proposed leadership project with a non-profit organisation, applying her newly developed leadership knowledge to serve the community.

Charmaine commented:

“It has been amazing to connect with like-minded scholars and the UCL Laws community, where I met a lot of outstanding people with unique perspectives and backgrounds. I look forward to exploring the in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge. I trust that in a globalised age of shifting job markets, I’ll use not a map, but a compass centred on my ambitions to better society and generate opportunities for people from all walks of life.

“This year, I have enjoyed studying contract theory, and this scholarship offers an incredible opportunity for me to go deeper into contract law and observe how the multiple operative principles interact and operate in different contexts. This would be a great chance to build up my interest and learn from top academics.”
